The shelter isn’t an ideal environment for dogs, and every true dog lover understands this. Sadly, kennels are often overcrowded with desperate dogs who struggle to thrive in such dark and cold surroundings.
It’s heart-wrenching to see any dog in a shelter, but it’s especially painful for senior dogs who have been abandoned and are left to spend their golden years in such a place.
For these dogs, the situation is even more difficult since most people prefer younger puppies, often ignoring older ones.
The response of the shelter’s longest-staying resident to a visitor one day beautifully demonstrates how much love matters to these poor souls.
“I’m not crying…”
Many dogs have passed through the Junction City Shelter in Kansas, and many heart-wrenching stories have been shared. However, one story involving an older dog is particularly sorrowful.
The senior Boxer Pit Bull mix, affectionately named ‘Grandma,’ recently became the shelter’s longest resident. Since no one wants her and her kennel is frequently ignored, the shelter staff decided to show how much love truly means to this dog.
They posted a video on their TikTok account, @jcanimalshelter, which brought many hearts to tears.
@jcanimalshelter Im not crying… you’re crying. #adopt #shelterdog #seniordog ♬ Sad, sad, Music – dg cria
The video clearly shows Grandma’s excitement when someone finally pays attention to her after so long of being overlooked.
The caption reads: “I’m not crying… you’re crying.”
This video captured a lot of attention and made many people’s hearts ache.
“Praying for this sweet senior! They’re the best🤍🤍🤍,” one user commented, while another added: “Boost for the Grandma♥️🐾 Someone needs this senior 🐶 ♥️.”
A third user wrote: “Grandma! You’re gonna find your safe space soon, baby! ✨”
The Heartbreaking Truth
Grandma is nearly 10 years old and became the shelter’s longest resident on November 2, 2024, after her previous owner surrendered her a year ago.
In the past 365 days, there was little interest in this poor senior dog, and that’s the heartbreaking truth.
Her age played the biggest role in this, along with her breed, which many consider less adoptable. Additionally, she requires to be the only pet in the house since she doesn’t get along with other dogs or cats.
All of these factors led to this sad situation, which led the Junction City Kansas Shelter to share the TikTok video. But the good news is that nothing has broken Grandma’s spirit, and she still has the energy and will to live. That’s why the shelter staff remains hopeful.
“She loves to curl up under blankets, sniff around for tasty treats, and soak up the sun. She’s best in a home with no other animals because she’s a Queen!” they wrote in a Facebook post. “Consider this sweet old lady!”
