When you go to the beach and see a spot with no waves, stay away.

This is likely a rip current, which can form randomly along the coast. These areas are usually darker because the water is deeper, the surface is calmer, and the waves are smaller.

If you step into a rip current, it can swiftly pull you out to sea at a speed that even an Olympic swimmer would struggle to overcome. Rip currents are responsible for 80% of sea drownings.

If you get caught in a rip current, stay calm and swim parallel to the shore to escape; do not try to swim directly back to the shore.
