The Inspiring Journey of Anna Grace and Hope Elizabeth Richards

Anna Grace and Hope Elizabeth Richards, conjoined twins born on December 29, 2016, underwent a remarkable seven-hour separation surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. The young sisters, who remained in the hospital for a year and a half before returning home, shared a liver, diaphragm, and a portion of their heart, all of which were meticulously separated during the procedure.

“We’ve held this moment in our hearts and prayers for nearly two years,” said Jill Richards, the twins’ mother, on the day of the surgery.

A Milestone at Texas Children’s Hospital

“It’s a profound experience to see our daughters in separate beds,” Richards shared. “Our gratitude to the entire team at Texas Children’s Hospital is beyond measure for turning this vision into reality.”

Prior to the primary surgery, Anna Grace and Hope Elizabeth had a preparatory procedure on November 6, 2017, where tissue expanders were placed to encourage their skin to grow and stretch adequately.

On January 13, 2018, a dedicated team of nearly 75 professionals, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiologists, and nurses from eight specialties, performed the intricate separation surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital.

A Team Effort for a Historic Outcome

“The triumph of this highly complex surgery reflects the tireless dedication of our team over the past year,” said Dr. Larry Hollier, surgeon-in-chief and chief of plastic surgery at Texas Children’s, as reported by the Independent.

“Through detailed simulations and numerous planning sessions, we prepared for every possible scenario that could occur during the separation.

“We are overjoyed with the results and are committed to supporting Anna and Hope throughout their recovery.”

A Journey Known from the Start

The Richards family learned they would welcome conjoined twins following a routine ultrasound. The girls were delivered via Caesarean section at 35 weeks.

Today, Anna Grace and Hope Elizabeth are flourishing. Their family is relieved that the surgeries and extended hospital stays are now part of their past.
