Couple Accuses Restaurant of Penalizing Them for ‘Bad Parenting,’ but Owner Reveals the Truth

Imagine enjoying a nice dinner at a restaurant after a long and tiring day, only for a child to throw a tantrum or run around from table to table while the parents act like nothing is wrong. We’ve all been there, right?

Well, the Toccoa Riverside Restaurant, a well-known spot in a picturesque Georgia locale nestled in the mountains along the Toccoa River, has had enough of parents not keeping their kids in check. They’ve introduced a surcharge for “adults unable to parent,” with a warning added at the bottom of the menu.

As you might expect, many parents are unhappy with this decision.

The menu doesn’t specify the exact amount of the charge, but several Google reviews mention parents being charged around $50.

One reviewer shared, “The owner came out and told me he was adding $50 to my bill because of my children’s behavior. My kids watched a tablet until the food arrived, ate their food, and my wife took them outside while I waited and paid the bill. Disappointed by the experience.”

Another reviewer warned, “If you have children, absolutely avoid this place at all costs. Holy moly – the most disrespectful owner made a huge scene in front of the entire restaurant because our children were ‘running through the restaurant’ – they were down by the river. We were told we need to ‘go to Burger King and Walmart’ and that we were bad parents.”

Tim Richter, the restaurant’s owner, explained that he introduced the surcharge a few years ago during the COVID-19 outbreak when a family with nine children visited, and the kids were “running all over the restaurant.” He didn’t charge them but gave a warning. “We want parents to be parents,” he said.

Guests have mixed reactions. Laura Spillman said, “That is crazy. For real? I don’t think you should do it because kids are cute.” In contrast, Anne Cox thought a potential charge might remind parents of their responsibilities.
