Why Women Should Avoid Peeing in the Shower

Advertisment

Firstly, we want to emphasize that there’s no judgment here. We’re simply acknowledging that many people admit to peeing in the shower, and it seems to be quite common.

Ladies, would you confess to doing this in your own homes? Our legal team has advised us not to confirm or deny these claims.

It’s comforting to know we’re not alone. According to Shape Magazine, 80% of their respondents admitted to peeing in the shower.

While this may seem harmless to most, some doctors advise against it for women. We’re not confirming or denying our habits, but we’re curious about their reasoning!

As part of our scientific curiosity, we learned from Dr. Alicia Jeffrey Thomas on TikTok (@scrambledjam) that this habit might be detrimental to our health.

Gynecologist Dr. Stacey Picart explains, “If your pelvic floor muscles are tight and prevent your bladder from completely emptying, this can lead to recurrent urinary tract infections.” Continuing to pee in the shower can condition your body to develop unhealthy practices.

“If you habitually urinate in the shower without needing to, you train your bladder to empty at much lower volumes, losing the ability to hold larger amounts of urine,” she says. “You can also train your brain to associate running water with the need to urinate, which can be problematic if you feel the urge every time you hear a tap running.”

Personally, we’re not too concerned about holding larger volumes—we manage that during long car trips and other situations. It’s unlikely you’ll lose bladder control over one occasional shower pee, right?
