It could be said that King Charles’ second year as monarch did not unfold as he might have wished. Owing to his ongoing cancer treatments, the king had to cancel many of his royal commitments and continues to face significant health challenges. Similarly, his beloved daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, experienced her own difficult year as she navigated similar health concerns, strengthening their bond in the process.
According to reports, Charles considers Kate the “daughter he never had,” and their relationship is now stronger than ever. Even so, Kate is expected to succeed Camilla as queen in the future. Despite witnessing the leadership of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and his wife, King Charles appears reluctant to offer his daughter-in-law advice on what to expect when her husband eventually assumes the throne.
While the king has shared insights with Kate during her time in the royal family, he has avoided giving her specific guidance on how to act as queen. Why this is the case may be attributed to a deeply personal and emotional reason.
The close relationship between King Charles and Kate Middleton has been evident for years. When Kate first joined the royal family, then-Prince Charles was reportedly impressed by her composure and grace, and their mutual respect has only grown since. Often described as “the daughter he never had,” their bond appears to have deepened further after they both faced cancer diagnoses last year.
Royal commentator Victoria Arbiter noted that the shared health challenges of Charles and Kate likely strengthened their already strong connection. Kate revealed her diagnosis in March of last year, while Charles disclosed his own just a month earlier, in February.
During this period, both Charles and Kate stepped back from many royal duties to focus on their health and recovery. In an interview with The Royal Beat, Arbiter suggested that their shared experiences provided “tremendous comfort” to one another. Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith agreed, telling People Magazine that their health struggles likely brought them closer.
Despite Kate’s role as a member of the royal family through marriage, Charles sees her as integral to the future of the monarchy. Christopher Andersen, author of The King, described Kate as the king’s “secret weapon” in ensuring the monarchy’s continued relevance. He explained that Charles’ respect for Kate’s elegance and determination led him to award her the prestigious title of Royal Companion of Honour, symbolizing his confidence in her ability to uphold royal traditions.
However, Andersen also noted that Charles refrains from advising Kate on her future role as queen. To do so might imply that his own reign is nearing its end — something Charles is understandably unwilling to acknowledge.
Furthermore, Andersen revealed that Camilla, Queen Consort, is also unlikely to offer Kate advice about life as queen. According to him, the two women share a “grudging respect” for one another, but Camilla has no intention of discussing her experiences in the role.
Broadcaster Helena Chard offered a contrasting perspective, emphasizing King Charles’ faith in Kate’s ability to excel as queen when the time comes. “Charles trusts Kate completely,” Chard said in an interview with Fox News. “He knows she prioritizes her family above all else, ensuring the well-being of the future heirs. When her moment arrives, she will step into the role with ease.”
Although Kate has reportedly recovered from her health challenges, she is unlikely to resume her full royal duties immediately. It remains uncertain how or when she will expand her responsibilities, but the trials of the past year appear to have given both Charles and Kate a renewed perspective on life.
As they move forward, this shared understanding may influence not only their relationship but also the future direction of the monarchy.
