Inside a Massive Apartment Complex Housing Over 20,000 Residents

In Hangzhou, China, the Regent International apartment complex, built to accommodate up to 30,000 residents, has captured widespread attention for its immense size and self-contained ecosystem. Crafted by Alicia Loo, the architect behind the Singapore Sands Hotel, this 675-foot tall, S-shaped structure currently houses around 20,000 individuals, establishing it as one of the most densely populated residences globally.

The building offers an extensive array of facilities, including restaurants, swimming pools, supermarkets, and nail salons, creating a vibrant community within its walls. This all-in-one design provides remarkable convenience, drawing numerous young professionals and students, with rental prices ranging from approximately $200 to $600 per month.

While celebrated for its innovative architecture and sustainability efforts, the complex has sparked discussions about the realities of living in such a high-density setting, with some raising concerns about privacy and access to outdoor spaces. Nevertheless, certain units include balconies, offering residents a personal outdoor retreat. Regent International represents a forward-thinking solution to urban housing, harmonizing vast capacity with the dynamics of shared living.
