Jim Carrey Lists His 12,700-Sq-Ft Sanctuary for $28.9 Million as He Transitions into Retirement

Jim Carrey, a Canadian-American comedian, actor, and writer, has left an indelible mark on entertainment.

Born on January 17, 1962, in Newmarket, Ontario, to a working-class family, Carrey showed a love for humor from a young age, even through financial hardships. He began his career as a stand-up comedian in his late teens, quickly gaining recognition for his energetic and unpredictable performances.

In the 1980s, Carrey moved to Hollywood seeking better opportunities, and it wasn’t long before casting directors and producers noticed his talent. Known for his entertaining comedy routines and dedication to making people laugh, he became one of the most beloved comedians of his generation. His lively stage presence and well-crafted sketches, often featuring physical comedy, impressions, and witty dialogue, consistently delighted audiences. Carrey frequently used music to underscore the absurdity of situations, improvising songs on the fly.

Carrey’s performances in iconic roles such as Stanley Ipkiss in “The Mask,” Ace Ventura in “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” and Fletcher Reede in “Liar Liar” have left a lasting impact on Hollywood. He has remained popular across various genres, including drama (“The Truman Show”), fantasy (“How The Grinch Stole Christmas”), and romance (“The Number 23”).

Carrey’s hilarious performance in 1985’s “Once Bitten” made an impression on moviegoers, but it was his role as Ace Ventura in the 1994 comedy classic that catapulted him to fame. His dynamic portrayal of the quirky pet detective captivated audiences and critics alike, earning comparisons to legendary comedians like Jerry Lewis and Charlie Chaplin.

Since his breakout role, Carrey has enjoyed a highly successful film career, starring in hits like “The Mask,” “Liar Liar,” and “Bruce Almighty.” His unique sense of humor has endeared him to millions worldwide, cementing his status as one of Hollywood’s most beloved comedy actors. Beyond his film success, Carrey has used his fame to support various humanitarian projects, including mental health awareness and environmental conservation.

Carrey, now 61, has amassed a considerable fortune, with an estimated net worth of $180 million. Recently, he listed his Los Angeles home for sale at $28.9 million. Despite his success, Carrey has faced numerous personal challenges, including struggles with depression and advocating for mental health awareness. In 2011, he published “Memoirs and Misinformation,” a book blending fiction with personal experiences to tell his life story.

Apart from acting, Carrey has explored other artistic pursuits, such as painting and writing. He recently starred in the popular film “Sonic The Hedgehog,” with a sequel released in 2022.

In April 2022, Carrey made headlines by announcing his retirement from acting, expressing a desire to focus on painting and spiritual pursuits. He stated, “I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

Recently, Carrey put his Los Angeles home up for sale. The 12,700-square-foot Brentwood mansion, which he bought in 1994, features five bedrooms, nine bathrooms, high ceilings, large windows, and luxurious hardwood floors. The chef’s kitchen boasts state-of-the-art appliances, while the home theater showcases an Art Deco design. The outdoor area includes a waterfall pool, hot tub, tennis court, sauna, and an organic vegetable garden.

In a Wall Street Journal interview, Carrey described the mansion as “a place of enchantment and inspiration” for nearly three decades. However, he acknowledged that he no longer spends much time there and decided to let someone else enjoy it. As he bids farewell to his cherished home, he quoted David Bowie’s “Changes”: “Cha cha cha cha… Changes!”

I read Mariela’s message three times, sitting on the edge of the bed in my hotel suite, with my hospital gown folded over a chair and my pre-op test results spread across the table. “You’re about to find out exactly what you signed.” That didn’t sound like a desperate sister. My husband drugged me every night “so I could study better,” but one night I faked swallowing the pill and stayed motionless. He thought I was asleep. At 2:47 AM, he came in with gloves, a camera, and a black notebook. He didn’t touch me with love. He lifted my eyelid and whispered: “The memory still hasn’t returned.”

Marcus froze in front of the screen. For the first time since I’d known him, he didn’t look like a doctor, or a husband, or a man in control of everything. My mother slapped my son over a toy, and the whole family pretended not to see the blood. I didn’t say anything; I carried him to the hospital… and when I returned with the report in my hand, even the favorite grandson stopped smiling.

Inside were three pages, a small key, and a photograph of Julian holding a newborn Matthew in front of the hair salon where I worked. Upon seeing it, Valerie brought her hand to her neck, as if the image had squeezed her throat from the inside. My mother tried to snatch the package, but the ... Read more

On my very first day at my new job, I saw a photo of my husband sitting on my coworker’s desk. I forced a smile, pointed at it, and calmly asked, “Who’s that?” She lit up and said, “That’s the man I’m going to marry.” For a moment, I forgot where I was. The office ... Read more

After a month of not speaking to me, my boyfriend posted his new woman in the middle of the night… this time, I didn’t go back to beg him.

At 1:17 in the morning, my phone lit up. I had just gotten out of the shower. My hair was still wet, the ends dripping onto the old t-shirt I wore to sleep. A red notification dot appeared on Instagram. It was a post from Adrian Shaw. My boyfriend. Or so I thought until that ... Read more

Before I got married, my mom forced me to put my $5 million Manhattan condo in her name. She said, “Don’t say a word to Mark or his family.” I thought she was losing her mind. “That condo will not be anyone’s retirement home,” my mom said, “because it doesn’t belong to Sophie.” The entire ballroom went deathly silent. Even the string quartet stopped mid-note.
