Kate Middleton’s ‘Embarrassing’ Moment When First Meeting Prince William: A Look Inside Their Rocky Dating History

Advertisment

Kate Middleton has spent much of the last few months at home due to her cancer diagnosis and subsequent abdominal surgery, necessitating rest at Adelaide Cottage. Fortunately, the Princess of Wales has resumed royal duties twice, most recently at the Wimbledon tennis tournament.

The princess and Prince William have faced numerous challenges in recent years. The future king has shouldered significant responsibility during Kate’s recovery and chemotherapy, while the ongoing feud with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has been draining. Despite these difficulties, the couple has persevered together.

Prince William and Kate Middleton first met while studying at university. However, their initial meeting was not as Kate had hoped, as she once described an ’embarrassing’ moment during their first encounter.

This year has been particularly tough for Kate Middleton and the royal family. King Charles was diagnosed with cancer while Kate was recovering from her surgery. In March, after months of speculation, the Princess of Wales revealed her own cancer diagnosis.

Fans around the world were concerned about Kate’s future, wondering if she would recover enough to fulfill her royal duties and be there for her children. Therefore, her appearance at Trooping the Colour in June was met with great excitement.

Kate Middleton – A Royal Comeback
Kate appeared to enjoy her royal return, smiling and waving to well-wishers, though her true condition was unclear.

A few days after Trooping the Colour, royal expert Katie Nicholl reported that Kate had not fully recovered, noting she took opportunities to sit during the event. Nicholl emphasized Kate’s determination to be present despite her ongoing recovery.

“The princess has this swan-like quality — gliding on the surface but paddling frantically beneath the water,” Nicholl told ET Online. “A significant amount of preparation and effort went into her appearance on Saturday.”

Kate remained on her feet for extended periods and accepted a seat when offered, indicating she wasn’t yet as strong as before her treatment.

“The scrutiny she faced on that day was immense,” Nicholl continued. “It likely took a toll, and she probably had a well-deserved rest afterward. We shouldn’t expect to see her in public for a while as she continues her recovery.”

Standing Ovation at Wimbledon
Royal expert Nicholl remarked on the importance of Kate’s attendance at Wimbledon, where she received standing ovations from the crowd.

“The crowd’s appreciation was evident with the prolonged standing ovation,” Nicholl said. “Kate was overwhelmed and delighted by the moment.”

“Kate is a great tennis player and fan, and it was important for her to attend Wimbledon. It would have been a shame for her, royal fans, and tennis fans if she hadn’t,” Nicholl added. “This was a significant event for her.”

Throughout this challenging time, Kate Middleton has received tremendous public support, while Prince William has taken on significant responsibilities at home with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

The past six months have been tough, but the Prince and Princess of Wales have managed their public responsibilities and private lives, strengthening their bond.

William and Kate first met at St Andrews University, quickly becoming friends and eventually falling in love.

Kate Middleton’s ‘Embarrassing’ First Meeting with Prince William
Meeting a future king was nerve-wracking for Kate, who recalled their first encounter left her face “bright red.” William struggled to remember the moment, saying he had to “rack his brains.”

“I went bright red when I met you and scuttled off feeling very shy,” Kate recalled. “William wasn’t there for much of the time initially, so it took time for us to get to know each other. But we became close friends early on.”

Their relationship flourished, but they split in 2007, which wasn’t easy.

Some experts suggested William ended the relationship because the “fun” had disappeared. Kate was reportedly “desperately upset” as she had envisioned their future together.

Shortly after, William was seen in London nightclubs with other girls.

Prince William & Kate Middleton’s Dramatic 2007 Split
Kate was understandably angry, feeling humiliated and that William was cheapening her image.

While William was stationed with the Household Cavalry in Dorset, Kate lived in London, causing them to spend time apart. They discussed their 2007 split in their engagement interview.

“We did split up for a bit,” William admitted. “We were both very young, finding ourselves and our different characters.”

“I wasn’t happy about it at the time, but it made me stronger,” Kate added. “You learn about yourself and realize the importance of independence. Looking back, I valued that time.”

Details of their split emerged in Tina Brown’s book, The Palace Papers. In April of that year, Kate and William had a phone call during her work at Jigsaw, where William ended the relationship, leaving Kate distraught.

A former colleague revealed Kate looked upset after the call but didn’t cry. She left work and never returned that day, later marked as sick, but it was clear she was upset.

Prince William & Kate Middleton’s Marriage “Stronger Than Ever”
Fortunately, William and Kate reconciled, married, and welcomed three children. Despite recent challenges, they remain strong.

Kate’s return to full royal duties is uncertain, but she and William support each other fully. Their smiles on the Buckingham Palace balcony during Trooping the Colour illustrated their resilience and optimism.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond remarked on their strong partnership and optimistic outlook for the future. Kate’s choice of a joyful photograph with William reflected their enduring bond and mutual support.

“She adores William — he is her rock,” Bond said. “Their marriage is stronger than ever.”
