Melissa Sue Anderson, known for her role as a star in ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ discusses her choice to relocate from Hollywood to Canada

Have you ever reminisced about an old show you used to love and wondered what the actors are doing now, years later? If you were a fan of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ and eagerly followed the adventures of the family living on the farm in Plum Creek near Walnut Grove, Minnesota, you’d likely be curious about the cast’s current endeavors.

For those who adored Melissa Sue Anderson, the talented actress who portrayed Mary Ingalls, there was hope that she would remain a part of their lives through the small screen. However, it turns out she had other plans.

Today, she discusses her decision to leave Hollywood behind and relocate to CanadaInitially, this actress began her acting career with guest roles, but she eventually made her mark in showbiz when she became a central figure in ‘Little House on the Prairie.’ Her stellar performances earned her multiple nominations for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series, and her dedicated fans recognized her well-deserved talent.

Reflecting on her experience filming the drama that catapulted her to fame, Melissa Sue Anderson shared with Pop Entertainment in 2010, ‘I consider myself fortunate that there was even a character to play. In the original books, Laura Ingalls, the author, didn’t develop Mary’s character extensively. Laura wrote about the best moments of her life, and characters like Ma and Mary played a smaller role. The focus was primarily on Laura, Pa, Jack the dog, and Mr. Edwards. Fortunately, they recognized my acting abilities.

After her portrayal of Mary Ingalls, she explored other minor roles. However, in 1990, she married television producer Michael Sloan and later relocated to Montreal in 2002 with her husband and their two children, daughter Piper and son Griffin.

In 2007, the family obtained Canadian citizenship, and with this new chapter in their lives came fresh responsibilities. Melissa Sue Anderson made the decision to step away from showbiz, prioritizing spending more time with her children. She wanted to ensure they didn’t feel pressured to follow in her acting footsteps.

In an interview with E-Talk, Anderson explained, ‘I stepped away for a long time. It was important for my kids to develop their own sense of identity, separate from being constantly with me.

However, Anderson didn’t step back from acting completely; instead, she took on small roles in recent years. Her life-changing experience as part of a series like ‘Little House on the Prairie’ inspired her to write a memoir titled ‘The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House.
