Reflecting on Barbara Eden’s Remarkable Life

Barbara Eden, the actress who made the world believe in magic and genies, turned 92 on August 23, 2023, and still looks stunning. The beloved star of I Dream of Jeannie has captivated fans for almost six decades, and her charm remains timeless.

Eden, who inspired countless fans to dream of their own wish-granting genie, achieved legendary status with her portrayal of Jeannie in the 1965 sitcom. However, behind the glitz and glamour, she faced personal heartbreak that no magic could fix: the loss of her only son, Matthew Ansara, to a heroin overdose in 2001.

Born during the Great Depression, Barbara Eden’s journey from poverty to stardom began in 1956 when she appeared in films such as A Private’s Affair and Twelve Hours to Kill and on TV shows like The Johnny Carson Show and I Love Lucy. In 1960, she starred alongside Elvis Presley in the film Flaming Star, introducing her talent to an international audience.

Her life changed forever in 1965 when she was cast as Jeannie, a charming genie set free by astronaut Captain Tony Nelson, played by Larry Hagman. The series ran for five seasons, making Eden a household name. That same year, she welcomed her son, Matthew, with her then-husband, actor Michael Ansara.

Despite her success, Eden’s personal life took a difficult turn. Her 15-year marriage to Ansara ended when Matthew was nine, a pivotal moment she believes influenced her son’s battle with substance abuse. Eden first noticed signs of trouble in 1984, when Matthew, then 19, returned home after living with his father. He exhibited behaviors like excessive sleeping and lying about being in college.

“Matthew never told us he was using heroin—he didn’t want to hurt us,” Eden revealed. “But we figured it out when he started acting sluggish, losing weight, and staying out all night.” She insisted on rehab, but his struggles persisted.

By the time Matthew was 20, Eden faced a heartbreaking decision: locking him out of her home. “It was the hardest thing I ever had to do,” she said.

For 12 years, Matthew battled addiction, going in and out of rehab. His parents worked together to support him, but his cycles of recovery and relapse continued. At 27, he found brief stability, marrying and studying creative writing at UCLA. However, his addiction resurfaced, leading to a separation from his wife.

In 2001, Matthew appeared to be on the mend, landing roles in To Protect and Serve and Con Games. He was engaged to a “wonderful girl” and expressed newfound joy in life. “Life is great, Mom,” he told Eden. “I can’t believe I spent so many years not being awake to how green the trees are.”

Tragically, on June 26, 2001, Matthew passed away at the age of 35 from a heroin overdose. Police found him in his truck with vials of anabolic steroids. “He had shot up with unusually pure heroin, and it was too much for his heart,” Eden explained.

Mourning her only child, Eden reflected, “He won a lot of battles, but he lost his personal war.” Matthew’s father, Michael Ansara, passed away in 2013 and is buried beside his son at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles.

Today, Barbara Eden remains a symbol of resilience. Married to architect Jon Eicholtz since 1991, she continues to inspire fans through her appearances on shows like Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition and her role as Mrs. Claus in the 2019 film My Adventures with Santa.
