Very few people can spot every hidden face in this tree — can you do it?

If you’re among the many people who genuinely enjoy stretching their minds with optical illusions, then you absolutely have my respect.

I, on the other hand, have never been particularly gifted at them. When I was six years old, my grandmother gave me a “train your brain” puzzle book for my birthday. It sat neatly on my bookshelf for almost a decade, untouched, collecting dust until I turned sixteen. Even then, once I finally opened it, I struggled to understand half of the puzzles hidden inside those pages.

Still, I’ve always known that brain teasers and visual illusions have a massive following online. People everywhere seem to love testing how well their eyes and minds work together, especially when the challenge involves spotting hidden objects or interpreting images that play tricks on perception. There’s something exciting about proving that you can find what others might overlook.

With that in mind, I thought it would be interesting to share an illusion I recently came across. The moment I saw it, I was immediately intrigued—and completely humbled—because I couldn’t get anywhere near the highest score. My eyesight and attention to detail have never been extraordinary, so I wasn’t too surprised. In the brain puzzle below, viewers are invited to count how many faces appear in what’s known as the “National Leaders Tree.”

The origin of the image isn’t entirely clear, but what is certain is that it has become extremely popular as people challenge each other, comparing results and bragging about who discovered the most faces.

Everyone notices the two faces at the bottom of the tree right away. Those are easy. The real challenge begins when you start searching for the others, some of which blend skillfully into the branches, textures, and shapes of the tree itself.

According to the viral claim circulating online, the number of faces you are able to find supposedly reveals something about your memory.

Of course, there are far more scientific and accurate ways to evaluate memory skills. Still, if you’re curious and want to play along, take a moment to count how many faces you can see. Write down your number, take your time, and once you’re finished, scroll down to see how your result is interpreted.

2 to 4 faces
As mentioned earlier, the two faces at the bottom are visible to anyone with a quick glance. If you find only one or two more beyond those, the claim suggests it might indicate a possible memory difficulty. These interpretations aren’t medical conclusions, but they’re part of the fun associated with the puzzle.

5 to 6 faces
If your count reaches five or six faces, the idea is that you may fall into a group that could be at increased risk for memory-related concerns such as early cognitive decline.

7 to 8 faces
A result between seven and eight faces suggests your memory is functioning within a reasonable range. It may not be exceptional, but it is stable. Puzzles and cognitive challenges like these can help keep your brain active and engaged.

More than 9 faces
Those who find nine or more faces are said to have excellent recall abilities and strong skills in recognizing facial patterns. According to the online interpretation, this represents the highest tier of performance.

If this image sparked any frustration, curiosity, or competitive energy, don’t worry. Below the puzzle, you can see where most of the faces are cleverly hidden.

How many recognizable faces were you able to locate? Share your number and your experience in the comments.

And if you’d like to test your friends, family members, or coworkers, feel free to share the challenge on social media. It’s always interesting to see how differently people’s eyes and minds work when facing the same picture.
