What Does It Mean When You Dream About a Deceased Loved One? Understanding the Symbolism

Some people dream, while others either don’t or simply don’t remember doing so.

But do dreams have any significance? While some believe that dreams are messages from unseen forces that we can’t perceive while awake, scientists suggest that dreams are merely the result of neural processes occurring in our brains.

Even while we sleep, our brains remain active. Sometimes, dreams reflect the day we’ve had, and other times, they reveal our fears. But what does it mean when we dream of someone who has passed away?

These dreams might be part of the grieving process or reflect transitions in our own lives. According to Healthline, the latter is often the case.

Such dreams are common during periods of change, like starting a new job, moving to a new place, or meeting someone new.

However, more important than the dream itself is how it makes us feel.

Rubin Naiman, Ph.D. in psychology, has spent years studying sleep patterns. He explains, “Dream interpretation involves decoding the dream. It enlightens us, expands our psychological awareness, and broadens our consciousness.”

So, dreaming of someone who is no longer alive may be related to the changes in our lives and how those changes impact us.

“A lot of contemporary neuroscientists believe that during REM sleep, the brain is engaged in maintenance tasks and that dreams are merely a byproduct, visually ‘kicking up dust.’ In this view, dreams are considered meaningless,” Naiman explains. “On the other hand, some believe that dreaming holds more significance than waking life. This perspective is reflected in ‘dream cultures,’ like the indigenous people of Australia, who see dreaming as essential to our spiritual existence.”

Experts categorize these dreams into four types.

First, dreaming of a deceased person might represent the brain’s attempt to process the pain of loss. If we hadn’t reconciled with the deceased before their passing, feelings of guilt might cause them to appear in our dreams. According to dream analyst Lauri Loewenberg, we might dream of a deceased person if we recognize some of their behaviors, like substance abuse, in ourselves. Some experts believe these dreams are visitations from the deceased, especially if they appear well-dressed or happy. If the dream leaves us with positive feelings, it might be the deceased person saying ‘Hello.’

Regardless of how we perceive dreams, they offer something profound. Dreams often provide insight into our souls and our connection with the deceased.
