Why King Charles Chose to Skip a Prince Ceremony for William

Monarch Charles’ decades-long journey to the throne finally concluded in 2022, following the passing of his mother, the iconic Queen Elizabeth II. However, his first year as king brought unforeseen challenges. In February 2023, Charles was diagnosed with cancer, a condition he continues to undergo treatment for today.

As a result, Prince William has stepped in on several occasions to fulfill royal duties on behalf of the king, giving him a glimpse of what his future as monarch might entail.

Unfortunately, these circumstances appear to have caused a shift in the relationship between Charles and William. Now, it seems King Charles has had a plan in place for William all along—centered on one crucial decision to prevent history from repeating itself.

King Charles paused cancer treatment for an Australia-Samoa trip in October

While undergoing cancer treatment, Charles understandably reduced his royal responsibilities. Buckingham Palace has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the king’s condition, including the type of cancer he is battling.

In the past year, questions have arisen regarding Charles’ ability to serve as king, especially as his age advances. Despite these concerns, Charles has carried on with many of his royal duties. In late October, both he and Queen Camilla embarked on a significant trip to Australia and Samoa. This travel posed a major test of the king’s health, particularly due to the extensive journey involved.

King Charles’ emotional reflection on his health during his Christmas speech

King Charles’ temporary suspension of his cancer therapy during the trip was seen as a positive indication of his resilience. Royal expert Jennie Bond commented that the king prepared himself for the “challenge” ahead.

It’s believed that his medical team accompanied him on the journey, not solely for ongoing treatment but also as a precautionary measure.

Looking ahead, Charles is expected to continue his cancer treatment into 2025. Though updates on his condition have been sparse, he has remained actively engaged in his royal responsibilities.

During his Christmas speech, King Charles addressed the subject with heartfelt words: “I am deeply grateful to all those who have offered us their kind words of sympathy and encouragement.”

The changing dynamic between King Charles and Prince William

Speculation regarding whether King Charles should abdicate in favor of Prince William has sparked considerable discussion. According to US Weekly, these questions have reportedly strained the relationship between the king and his eldest son. Insiders reveal that their dynamic has experienced moments of friction.

Like his father, Prince William has been preparing for his eventual ascension. Following Charles’ coronation, royal aides began accelerating plans for William’s future role, particularly in light of the king’s cancer diagnosis.

“He’s a lot weaker and tires easily”

Though Charles has long awaited his time on the throne, it appears he has come to terms with the possibility of a short reign. A royal insider shared with Woman’s Day that the king accepted this reality years ago.

While hesitant to grant William too much power too soon, Charles has reportedly held private discussions with him to plan for the future. Simultaneously, William and Kate Middleton have been preparing for their roles much earlier than anticipated.

King Charles’ new approach for William

Despite his ongoing health challenges, it’s unlikely King Charles would willingly abdicate the throne—and understandably so. Even as he expresses confidence in William’s capabilities, Charles seems determined to maintain his position for as long as possible.

Notably, when Charles was named Prince of Wales, he underwent a formal installation ceremony that stirred controversy in Wales. Welsh author Huw Thomas, in his book Charles: the King and Wales, noted that Charles’ challenging experience during his installation influenced his decision to spare William from the same process.

“The monarchy is built on tradition”

Although William has yet to be formally installed as the Prince of Wales, the title remains significant. When William ascends the throne, it’s expected that his son, Prince George, will take on the title in turn.
