Have you ever returned from a long weekend, business trip, or vacation to find that your digital clock has been reset? You might suspect a power outage occurred while you were away, but pinpointing exactly when it happened and how long it lasted can be tricky.
This uncertainty can make it difficult to determine how long the food in your refrigerator was exposed to warmth before cooling down again, potentially leading to spoilage.
Fortunately, Sheila Pulanco Russell shared a helpful tip on her Facebook page that can put your mind at ease about whether your freezer food is still safe to eat or needs to be discarded. This tip is particularly useful for anyone who has to leave their home for an extended period.
The solution involves three common household items: a cup, a coin, and some tap water.
In a widely shared Facebook post, Sheila describes the method:
“For those of you evacuating from the coast, I’ve heard a great tip called the ‘one cup tip.’ Place a cup of water in your freezer and freeze it solid. Then, place a quarter on top of the frozen water and leave it in your freezer. When you return after being away, you can check if the quarter has shifted.
If the quarter has fallen to the bottom of the cup, it means your food thawed completely and should be discarded. If the quarter is still on top or in the middle, your food might still be safe. This tip is also useful to keep in your freezer at all times, so you can check for power outages in the future.
If you’re unsure about the safety of your food, it’s better to throw it out. Your safety is the most important thing.”
Please SHARE this useful tip with family and friends—it might help someone ensure their food is safe and avoid potential health risks.
