Shannon was sitting in her car in a shopping center parking lot when she noticed something unusual—a string tied to the driver’s side door handle of another vehicle. The string, similar to what might be used to tie a gift, struck her as odd. Her concern deepened when she noticed another string on a different car.

In her TikTok video, Shannon expressed alarm, saying, “Someone better not get kidnapped.” This led viewers to interpret the string as a potential tactic used by kidnappers. Comments poured in with mixed reactions.

One viewer explained, “FOR ALL THE CONFUSED PEOPLE: So basically, the string is really hard to untie, so it takes a minute, and while you’re untying it, you get kidnapped.” Others shared prayers for safety, with one writing, “LORD, HEAVENLY FATHER, please PLEASE protect me and everyone else who’s viewing this video from all the negative energy. Amen.”

However, not everyone agreed with this theory. Some dismissed the string as harmless, like “friendship bracelets.” Yet, another TikToker, Reese, provided an alternative explanation, suggesting the string might actually be wire, which could be even more dangerous. According to Reese, “The reason people use wire is because it will distract you for longer, and even if you have wire cutters, it will still take you a minute.”

Reese also offered practical advice. “If you see this on your car, do not approach your car alone. The best thing you can do in that situation is go back to wherever you were that was the most populated,” he recommended.

The takeaway? If you notice anything unusual on or near your car—such as a string tied to the door handle, a water bottle on the hood, or any unexpected item—don’t approach it alone. Even if it’s harmless, it’s better to err on the side of caution. Return to a populated area like the store and ask a staff member or security guard to accompany you to your vehicle. Staying vigilant and cautious could make all the difference.
