For example, have you ever wondered why your underwear sometimes has bleach stains? Many have asked this same question online and found answers. It turns out these discolorations have nothing to do with your washing machine, as some speculated.

According to reports, the natural pH levels of the vagina are responsible for these “bleach” spots. There’s no cause for concern; finding these spots on your underwear is actually a good sign. A substance’s pH level indicates how acidic or alkaline it is. As one useful tweet explains:

“It’s completely normal to find lighter patches in a woman’s underwear due to the acidic nature of the vagina, with a pH range of 3.8-4.5. This dispels the myth that these spots are due to poor hygiene. In fact, a healthy vagina can bleach the fabric.”

Dr. Vanessa MacKay of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists notes that the vagina has a natural secretory system that keeps it clean, aided by the beneficial bacteria it contains.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the pH of the vagina typically ranges from 3.8 to 5.0, which is quite acidic compared to the neutral pH level of 7.

Dr. MacKay adds, “Disturbing this natural balance can lead to infections, but it’s perfectly normal and healthy for women to have clear or white discharge.”
