A 12-year-old foster child, Andrew, finally found his forever home with the family of his best friend. After his second adoption fell through, Kevin and Dominique Gill, the parents of his close friend Joc, decided to adopt him.
In 2018, the Gills welcomed Andrew into their Tennessee home after learning he had spent six years in foster care. Andrew’s journey was marked by hardship—his biological parents had their parental rights terminated, and while his four siblings were adopted, Andrew was left waiting for a family of his own.
When Kevin and Dominique first fostered Andrew, they were determined to give him a safe and loving environment. However, the transition wasn’t easy. Dominique recalled that 10-year-old Andrew was withdrawn during his first week, often isolating himself in his room with the door closed. He frequently pushed them away and struggled to open up. But the Gills, understanding the trauma Andrew had endured, were patient and unwavering in their support. They showered him with love and care, gradually helping him feel more comfortable.
One bright spot in Andrew’s adjustment was the bond he formed with Joc, the Gills’ son. The boys connected over shared interests like playing Minecraft and enjoying snacks such as Pop-Tarts. Their friendship became a cornerstone of Andrew’s healing journey and played a crucial role in his eventual integration into the family.
After living with the Gills for more than a year, Andrew moved out as the couple initially intended to help him find a permanent family rather than adopt him themselves. However, when his second adoption didn’t work out, Kevin and Dominique realized that Andrew was meant to be a part of their family all along.
One day, while walking through the park with a Youth Villages counselor, Andrew experienced a life-changing surprise. He turned to see the Gills standing nearby, holding signs and balloons. They asked him if he wanted to officially become part of their family. Without hesitation, Andrew said yes.
Reflecting on the journey, Dominique shared that many people were intimidated by Andrew’s background when reading his case file, but she and Kevin saw the goodness in him beyond his trauma. She affirmed that “love doesn’t have a color” and emphasized that Andrew was just as much their son as Joc. Today, Andrew is a cherished member of the Gills family, forever grateful to the people who never gave up on him.
