Meet the Woman Who Transformed Herself Into a ‘Vampire’ with Full-Body Tattoos — and Her Cautionary Message

A Guinness World Record holder has issued an important message to those considering following in her footsteps of extreme body modifications.

Maria José Cristerna, known as the “Real-Life Vampire” due to her distinctive appearance, holds the record for the most bodily modifications. Her transformation has been a lifelong journey, starting with her first tattoo at the age of 14. Over the years, she has amassed 50 physical changes, including tattoos, piercings, implants, and even eye pigmentation. Her striking transformation earned her the Guinness World Records title for 2022.

Among Cristerna’s unique modifications are arm and forehead implants, a split tongue, and a nearly complete coverage of tattoos across her body—including her eyeballs. Her appearance has become a symbol of self-expression and personal empowerment. Despite the dramatic nature of her changes, Cristerna urges people to consider their choices carefully.

“In the beginning, my dad didn’t agree with the idea,” Cristerna shared in an interview with Guinness World Records. “But after that, he took me to the tattoo studio to get my very first tattoo.” She emphasized her passion for art, saying, “Art runs through my veins. Since I was a little kid, I loved art, and now I can express it through my body.”

Cristerna has spoken openly about the personal journey behind her transformation. She attributes her body modifications to overcoming an oppressive and abusive ten-year marriage. Her changes, she says, symbolize strength and liberation. “The only way to escape from violence and abuse is by loving yourself. We came to this world to be happy,” she explained.

Although each modification holds a special meaning, Cristerna revealed that the most painful procedures were the implants in her arms and the pigmentation of her eyes. Despite the challenges, she remains steadfast in her commitment to self-expression. “You always can reach your goals. There are no limits. Nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it,” she declared.

Cristerna’s ultimate goal is to achieve 100% tattoo coverage, proudly stating, “I don’t care what people think about me. I put myself in first place. I know who I am, and that is what is important.”

However, she cautions young people to think carefully before making irreversible changes. “The advice I would give is that you have to think about it a lot, as it is irreversible,” Cristerna said. “I love the way I look, but you have to understand that there are young people who are very open to tattoos and piercings. It’s become fashionable, so we might get to a point where it’s not what we want anymore.” She added, “You have to think about it very hard in order to love it and be able to defend it your whole life.”

Despite her warnings, Cristerna continues her journey of self-expression. Recently, she shared a photo on Instagram of her latest tattoo session, showing an artist working on her back. The accompanying caption read, “One more stripe for my brother’s tiger, Rene Camarena Laus Satanus.”

Cristerna’s story is an inspiring example of perseverance, artistry, and personal empowerment. Her message of self-love and careful consideration serves as a thoughtful reminder for anyone contemplating similar changes.
