The child’s mother alerted the police on Monday, August 19, when the boy’s father failed to return him as scheduled. A thorough search followed, and on Wednesday, August 21, the heartbreaking outcome was confirmed.

On the evening of August 19, the Isabella County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a mother concerned about her missing six-year-old son. The father was supposed to return the boy that morning, but he never showed up.

As the search continued, the boy’s mother posted pictures of her son on social media, while deputies went to the home of Michael Steven Winchell to look for him and his son, Rowan Milford Morey.

Despite extensive efforts, the police were unable to locate Winchell or the child within the first 24 hours.

Detectives reached out to Winchell’s relatives, but they too were unable to contact him.

On August 21, family members joined the search at Winchell’s property. During their search, they discovered an isolated camper at the back of the property. Upon breaking a window to gain access, they found Winchell unresponsive. Police then entered the camper and, tragically, found both Winchell and Rowan had passed away.

While the investigation is ongoing, initial findings suggest that Winchell may have taken his son’s life before turning the gun on himself.

“Thank you for sending your prayers for a safe return. Unfortunately, our worst fears were confirmed, and Rowan has been found but is no longer with us,” the boy’s mother shared on Facebook after the discovery.

This devastating event leaves many in shock, questioning how such a tragedy could occur.
