When They Found This Helpless Creature on the Street, They Knew It Needed Urgent Help

When rescuers discovered Hidey wandering the streets, they quickly realized the cat was in desperate need of help. While cats are often considered independent, certain breeds require regular grooming. Tragically, Hidey endured years of neglect because her owner was unable to care for her properly. Her severely matted fur led rescuers to initially mistake her for an alien-like creature.

Paul Russell, who first encountered the 14-year-old feline, exclaimed, “My god, this is a cat!” Fortunately, Hidey was saved by a compassionate couple and brought to the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center.

The neglect Hidey suffered was a consequence of her owner’s Alzheimer’s, which left the cat unable to receive the care she needed. She has since become a poignant reminder of the importance of supporting elderly individuals and their pets.

Dan Rossi, the shelter’s CEO, stressed the responsibility of pet ownership, particularly for older adults. Hidey’s fur had become so tangled and matted it resembled dreadlocks. After the medical team shaved off the dense fur, Hidey found a loving home with a family member. Her story underscores the critical need to assist elderly pet owners to ensure their animals’ well-being.
