Inspiring Woman with a 100-lb Leg Encourages Embracing Uniqueness

Growing Up with Lymphedema

Living in Tennessee, Mahogany faced difficulties from an early age. The excess weight of her leg drained her energy and made walking challenging. “It drains my energy, of course, because it’s an extra 100 pounds,” she shared. She manages her condition through physiotherapy and massages.

Mahogany recalls her childhood struggles, stating, “I’ve been through a very depressed state because you’re a little kid, and you have a bunch of grown adults staring at you. It can affect you more mentally and emotionally.” She often felt unattractive and turned down every surgery offered to her, choosing instead to accept herself as she was.

The Beginning of Her Modeling Career

In 2017, while working at Walmart, Mahogany’s life changed dramatically when a photographer offered to photograph her. “I was like, ‘I’m getting older now, maybe it’s time I start putting my full body out there,’ and hopefully me doing that can help somebody else,” she said.

Her appearance in a viral YouTube video marked the beginning of her flourishing modeling career. Her social media presence quickly grew, bringing in a wave of positive responses. “Mainly, I’ve gotten a lot of positive responses, and the ones I like the most are that it helps people who also feel low about themselves,” she remarked.

Spreading Body Positivity

Mahogany continues to spread body positivity and encourages everyone to embrace their unique features. She remains optimistic and aims to inspire others to do the same. “People have been so nice and supportive of me online. It isn’t all trolling and negativity,” she noted.

Looking ahead, Mahogany hopes to make it big, buy her mother a house, and raise awareness about lymphedema. “If I ever make it big, I want to buy my mother a house and take care of my family, then I’ll do everything I can to raise awareness of lymphedema to pay it back to everyone who has ever shown me kindness,” she said.

Her journey has inspired many, showing that struggles can make us stronger. “For the longest, I felt so low about myself, but once I got older and with loads of support from the online lymphedema community and my mom who is my inspiration, I realized how beautiful I am. Not only looks, but as a person,” she reflected.
